2 Free Fitness App that I love for Beginning or Restarting Exercise & Running! (+2 BONUS)

Updated: Jun 6

Nike has two apps on my top 5 list. I like both the Nike Training Club (NTC) and the Nike Run Club apps. For this post, I'll stick to why NTC is one of my favorite apps to recommend to women just starting or restarting their fitness journey.

  • You need little to no equipment for many of their workouts. You can also select from areas like "Workout Focus," "Muscle Group," "Equipment," "Trainer-Led Classes," and more. The key as a trainer is encouraging women to create a plan (check out my online class that helps you plan your training). Only doing core to lose the mama's belly will not work; focus on training the whole body, cardio, strength training, stretching, and meditation.

  • NTC has short videos for each movement. In the fitness world, we sometimes call the same exercise by different names; other times, an exercise has a universal name. Herenorthere, I love that NTC shows you the movements and provides key cues to focus on to help you perform quality movements and maximize the benefit of the exercise.

  • You can save, schedule, and share a workout! I love that you can save for your favorite workouts. Saving a workout is also helpful if you want to repeat it in your program; you can save it instead of searching for it. If you use the in-app scheduler, the app will send you a reminder before your workout. What about a workout partner? Now you and a friend can do the same workout. Just click the share button and send it to your friend.

The NTC app is free, and the running app is just as amazing with training programs for a mile, 5K, 10K, half-marathon, and marathon. There's an app called FitBod next on my list to explore.

The other app that I love, although it is not free is the Peloton App and now they have a Peloton Strength App. What I love about the Peloton app is that if you like to workout in the comfort of your own home, need to workout on vacation or in the hotel on a business trip, the app has so many great options.

As a trainer I use the Peloton app and tried the strength app. The strength app has a cool concept, and you can swap out exercises if you don’t have the specific equipment for it, but the drawback is that some of the swaps may be the same exercise. I don’t use the Peloton Strength app often. I love the Peloton instructors and the fun things they say.

What is your favorite fitness app? I want to check it out. Is it paid or free?
